Meaning of “The Moon Will Sing” by The Crane Wives
The title of this song (“The Will Sing”) is derived from a line in the chorus where the vocalist puts forth that “the moon will sing a song for (her)”, which is that she “loved” the addressee “like the sun”. That statement/metaphor does not rightfully encapsulate what’s going on in this narrative, except for that “loved” part maybe, as it seems that Emilee Petersmark has concluded that her relationship with the other party involved should come to an end.
As with the chorus, the lyrics are also by and large metaphorical. And what they seem to point to is the vocalist presenting herself as a romantic partner who for the most part put the direction and destiny of her relationship with the addressee in his hands.
Or let’s say that Emilee perceived that as a pair they had unlimited potential, but she left it up to the other party, presumably because he’s the man in the equation, to get them there. But alas, he obviously disappointed her in that regard. And beyond that, the singer comes off as throughout these “10 years’ worth of dust and neglect” her own personal development has been stifled as well.
So going back to the chorus, Emilee is asserting that she did truly love the addressee throughout. But reading in between the lines, she is probably making that statement to rationalize or ease the pain of following it up with a dumping.
“The moon will sing a song for me
I loved you like the sun
Bore the shadows that you made
With no light of my own”
