“Alone or With Friends” by Tribes
Tribes’ “Alone or With Friends” reads a lot like a love song. That is at points the title comes off like a metaphor implying that the singer needs certain people, specifically his ‘old lover’, in his life.
But that’s more like the theme of the second half of the tune. As Tribes’ frontman Johnny Lloyd has explained, this song is dealing with two different subjects – “breaking up and getting high”. So in terms of the aforementioned sentiment, it can be said that he is making that observation, in terms of the important role his significant other plays, in light of the two of them being on the verge of parting ways. But during the first part of the track, as in when he cannot ascertain whether he is “at the bottom of the ocean or way up in the sky” or “alone or with friends”, that can definitely be interpreted as a scenario in which he is stoned.
Conclusion
So conclusively, the title of this song can be viewed to be both literal and symbolic. More specifically, when it is taken literally it is more or less in regards to the singer’s romantic interest. But on a metaphorical level, it is symbolic of the singer not being completely cognizant of his surroundings due to being high.
