“Return of the Mack” by Mark Morrison

The track “Return of the Mack” was released in 1996  by Mark Morrison. The song is about his bouncing back after losing his girl. He mentions that he pushed and made it because he wanted to show the girl that he could make it. He talks about how she lied to him when he had admitted to her that he was in love with her. Now, he seems to be very proud of himself especially because the heartbreak inspired him to do better for himself.

He also admits that the breakup really hurt him and that he had cried in pain. Indeed the dude was really was in love with her and would have died for her. However, she hurt him so badly by going back on all the promises she made to him. Promised to never turn on him or cause him any pain but ended up doing exactly that.

And in a way, even though he’s trying to remind her that he told her he was going to make it, a part of him is mocking her that she could not stay long enough to enjoy who he has become now.

This song seems to echo what a lot of people go through before they find themselves in a better place. Mark was hopeful about making it but it seems his girl was not as hopeful as he was. As a result of that, she ended up giving up on him.

Now, he’s telling that he was worth staying with. Furthermore, it feels like his pain from the breakup has been masked by his success, making him feel that finally,  he’s in a better place.

At the end,  he sings ‘oh little girl’, ‘wants my pearl’, which seems to mean she wants him back or probably wants something from him.

Just danced to this last night. A classic. Timeless. One of my longtime favorites. Requested it, and all the “young kids” left the dancefloor…DJ played it as the last song of the night. Perfect!!! Only those of us who knew and loved it stayed on the dance floor to enjoy it! Awesome!

The, ‘Ah, Mark, stop lying about your big break….’ seem very personal and inciteful. I bet that part of the conversation stayed with him a long time. Morrison has a mellifluous voice. I had to look tyhese lyrics up in print to really understand his intent.
