A Flock of Seagulls

English synth-pop and new wave band, A Flock of Seagulls became influential in the 1980s, gaining recognition for pioneering what has come to be known as electronic music, dance music, and contemporary pop.

The group was originally formed by Michael Score (lead vocalist and keyboardist) in Liverpool in 1979. Michael formed it along with his brother Alister J. Score (drummer), and Francis L. Maudsley (bassist). Lead Guitarist Paul Reynolds was widely noted for being a part of the band’s most renowned line-up and for his unique guitar skills.

A Flock of Seagulls first garnered attention in the early 1980s when the music video for I Ran (So Far Away) received ample airplay on MTV. The song became an international hit, topping Australian charts and reaching the Top 10 in New Zealand and the United States.  The band also produced several successful singles including:

  • Space Age Love Song (1982)
  • The More You Live, the More You Love (1984)
  • Wishing (If I Had A Photograph of You)

In 1983, the group won a Grammy Award for their 1982 instrumental titled D.N.A.

The band has had several different lineups over the years with at least 25 former members. As of October 2020, the current lineup includes founding member Mike Score and the following:

  • Bass guitarist Pando
  • Drummer Kevin Rankin
  • Lead guitarist Gord Deppe

In May 2018, the band’s original members were scheduled to reunite and record a new album featuring Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. The 12-track album, titled Ascension would be the group’s first studio recording since 1984. On June 6, 2018, the music video for Space Age Love Song was premiered on YouTube, while an EP consisting of five different versions of the song were released on June 8. The band also released the orchestral version of their hit song I Ran in December 2018.
