Gregory Porter’s “Mister Holland” Lyrics Meaning
“Mister Holland” is very poetic, and knowing its historical backstory makes it, from a sentimental perspective, much easier to understand. But as for the present, the titular “Mister Holland” is named after a professional friend of Gregory Porter’s named Jools Holland. In other words, the character is based on Jools.
And as explained by Porter, Jools is very much a Whiteman though one that has freely accepted Gregory, a Black, into his home. So this song basically consists of a fantasy where Kevin is dating Jools’ daughter, and “Mister Holland” is accepting of the relationship despite the two of them being of different races.
Now going back to the historical backdrop, it just so happens that Kevin did in fact have a thing with a White girl back during his teenage years. However, that relationship was cut short when, upon visiting her home, the girl’s dad let it be known in no uncertain terms (i.e. via utilization of the N-word) that he did not approve of his daughter dating a Black dude.
So the character of “Mister Holland” is based on Jools Holland’s real-life personality mixed with a romantic fantasy on the part of Gregory Porter. Or put more simply, he wishes his ex-girlfriend’s dad was as racially tolerant as some white people, such as Jools, actually are.
All in all
It reads as if the main reason Porter was compelled to compose a song of this nature, even though he was nearly 50 years old when it dropped, is as a form of therapy. That is to say that getting dissed like that when he was a teenager was a traumatizing experience.
Or let’s say that race is the last thing any of us want to be judged for, considering that we have no control over the natural color of our skin. But at least now in hindsight, Gregory is able to sorta laugh at the situation and even make money and headlines from it.
