“Maybe My Soulmate Died” by Iamnotshane

The sentiment that lies at the center of “Maybe My Soulmate Died” revolves around the vocalist being the type who is not inclined to fall in love. That’s not to say that he’s not looking forward to having that special someone in his life, as obviously he is. But instead the situation is such that Shane, as expressed in the second verse, possesses a strong “fear of rejection”. So when a potential significant other does come along, as in the first verse, the vocalist is woefully apprehensive, i.e. “always second guessing”, as put forth in the bridge.

So as the matter reads, he’s been in this predicate a number of times, as in someone being around who he’s romantically interested in. However, fear prevents iamnotshane from trying to take it there. As these stories tend to go, he’s plagued with fantasies, if you will, to the effect of what could have been if he weren’t such a romantic coward.

And that brings us to the title, “maybe my soulmate died”. In context, it means that, under Shane’s estimation, perhaps that special someone has already materialized in his life. But with him being afraid to move accordingly, he believes that now the opportunity may have already come and gone.
