“I Hate Everything About You” by Three Days Grace

Based on the way the chorus of this song is lyrically structured, some analysts have understandably argued that “I Hate Everything About You” is based on a love/hate sentiment the vocalist possesses towards the addressee.

But as explained by singer/co-writer Adam Gontier, the hate side of the equation is really supposed to take precedence. So after letting the addressee know that he “hates everything about” her, the narrator follows up by asking himself why does he love her nonetheless apparently isn’t meant to be taken as him being confused or anything like that.

Rather, it would be more along the lines of Adam not understanding why he has such strong feelings for this person to begin with.

And in his aforenoted explanation, he explained that the thesis sentiment behind this piece isn’t really meant to be restricted to romantic relationships per se. But as presented, that’s definitely how it reads, as if the parties involved are engaged in a romance so woefully tumultuous that it’s challenging to ascertain what’s actually keeping them together.

“I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?”

But as noted earlier and as further implied in the outro, what is keeping them together would obviously be the love that they share. But all things considered, classifying this as a love song would be a stretch.

Instead, this track can be very much counted as a hate song, though one which, even if unintentionally, shows that a romance can survive despite the parties involved not being overly fond of each other. But this mode of survival would be what Gontier considers “wasting time”.
