“Blaming Myself” by Eddie Clutch

As of the issuance of “Blaming Myself” on 21 October 2022, Eddie Clutch, who hails from a part of New Jersey known as Manalapan, can be considered an up-and-coming rapper. He has a notable social-media presence of approximately 200,000 Instagram followers. But his discography, is only a few tracks deep, even though it dates back to 2016 with a song titled “Eiffel Tower Freestyle”.

Besides for those aforementioned facts, there really isn’t much readily available about him, except Clutch boasting, via his Facebook page, that his songs have logged “over 5 million plays”.

Eddie Clutch wrote “Blaming Myself” with its featured artist, Tylfuego, who also has a sparse internet presence at the moment. And its producers are IanPlug and E Smooth. The former has a history working with Juice WRLD, which is a noteworthy fact considering the nature of this song’s lyrics.

“BLAMING MYSELF”, AN EMO-RAP OUTING

What the vocalist is blaming himself for, expressed verbatim, is “losing control just to find you”, i.e. the addressee. The said individual, as revealed later in the song, would be his significant other.

The reason this can be deemed a traditional emo rap is because it revolves around the vocalist making a conscientious effort to mitigate his overall depression, which in large part has something to do with or is affecting the romantic relationship he’s in. And in complying to the emo standard, those efforts would include the likes of poppin’ Percocet and rolling up blunts.

This piece also features a money-based braggadocious element, i.e. Eddie alluding to his wealth in a roundabout way, via noting that he’s “counting… bands”, i.e. rolls of money, on top of driving a “mother*cking Benz”, which is an expensive brand of automobile.

Manalapan, where Clutch comes from, appears to be a pretty well-to-do township, so for all we know he may be stacking paper like that. But if so, logic would dictate that at this point he didn’t generate that income from his music career. So again, it’s more likely he’s making that statement in compliance with mainstream rap ideologies, if you will.

WILL WE HEAR FROM EDDIE CLUTCH AGAIN?

Currently, “Blaming Myself” has performed a lot better than any other tracks Clutch has put out. But even now, some months after its dropping, there doesn’t appear to be follow-up, whereas conventionally young, unknown musicians are quick to capitalize on a bit of virality. But we can take for granted that Eddie will come out with more songs in the future. However, in terms of how well they fare remains to be seen.
