Cory Asbury’s “Reckless Love” Lyrics Meaning

“Reckless Love” is based on the idea of God loving His people, a concept which is thoroughly-expounded on within the Bible itself. More specifically, it can be said to be centered on the idea of God being ever-faithful, even when His followers are not. For instance, Cory Asbury depicts himself as someone who was once a foe of God. However, he is here to celebrate that even adopting such a disposition did not alienate God’s love for him.

So basically, the title of this track is a metaphor. And what it means within the context of the song is that even when a certain individual, like the singer, may forsake God, the latter will put it all on the line to come after him and win him back. Or as Asbury explained in his own view, God’s heart is broken when people commit sin. Yet He is ever-willing to forgive and accept such individuals back.

So perhaps a more-generalistic way of describing this song is as it being based on God’s well-documented mercy. Yes, from a theological standpoint there may be issues with the way Cory allegorizes his disposition. But by the large, the idea the lyrics generally point to is that the love of God does not tend to waver based on the actions of the individual.

“O, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God”
