“Deliver Me” by Sarah Brightman

This narrative of “Deliver Me” finds the vocalist addressing someone she perceives as a savior. In her eyes, this person posses the ability to “deliver” her from the likes of emotional turmoil and psychological issues including a feeling of bewilderment, etc.

Or viewed differently, such inner maladies having been plaguing the singer her entire life. But now she has actually identified someone (the addressee) who can definitively ‘pull her through’, i.e. save the vocalist from this enduring sensation of melancholy. So the main purpose of the lyrics is entreating said individual to in fact ‘deliver her’.

But there is a twist to the conclusion of this song that is actually revealed back in the first verse. And that would be that the aforementioned addressee, the one who has the ability to save the narrator, is actually revealed to be herself.

In other words, the vocalist realizes that only she can save herself from this depression. Or stated alternatively, the “strength” to defeat the aforementioned illnesses already exists “inside” of her.

So the conclusive implication would be that challenge which lies ahead, if previously more externally-focused has now become more of an internal affair. That is to say the vocalist has charged herself with being the main impetus to “deliver” happiness and meaning to her own life.

Brightman is a singer from London who, despite not being a household name, has enjoyed a long, successful career. She specializes in a genre known as “classical crossover” and accordingly has experience working in theatre.

And to note, Brightman was once married to legendary theatrical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. In fact the two of them met in the early 1980s while she was performing in one of the most famous musicals he ever scored, Cats (1981).

Despite being issued as a single, “Deliver Me” doesn’t have a chart history to speak of. However, it has become sort of a fan favorite. This is partially due to being featured on a 1999 film entitled Brokedown Palace.
