“Don’t Leave Me This Way” by Thelma Houston

The main theme of Thelma Houston’s “Don’t Leave Me This Way” is that of desperation and anxiety at the thought of a loss. Here, the narrator feels abandoned by their love interest and is pleading that they do not leave them.

While expressing an undying love for this person, the singer acknowledges that she cannot survive without this person in her life. Throughout the verses, it is clear that this person may have led the singer on, only to abandon her when she feels most attached.

The singer’s greatest desire as seen in the lyrics is that her love interest will come back and continue the relationship they started. Her greatest fear however is that this person is leaving her heartbroken and more desperate than she initially felt.

Facts about “Don’t Leave Me This Way”

This song was written by Cary Gilbert alongside the famous 1970s’ songwriting duo of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. And originally “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was rendered by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, led by singer Teddy Pendergrass, in 1975.

The following year it ended up in the hands of Thelma Houston after being intended for Diana Ross. Houston’s version came out via Tamla Records (aka Motown) as part of her album “Any Way You Like It” on 2 December 1976.

Houston’s version proved to be a much bigger success than the 1975 version (which was the original). Her version reached the summit of the Hot 100 singles chart in America. In the United Kingdom (i.e. the UK Singles Chart), it was a top 10 hit, actually peaking at number 5. Simply put, this song became Houston’s first hit. The track also charted in a handful of countries when it was remixed in 1995. And part of the tune’s long-enduring significance had to do with the fact that it was unofficially adopted by the gay community as a theme song related to the AIDS epidemic.

This song also earned Thelma Houston what appears likely to be the only Grammy Award of her lifetime. This was achieved in 1978 in the Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female category.

Summary

“Don’t Leave Me This Way” expresses the intense feeling of desperation when one is abandoned by a love interest.
