“Everybody’s Coming to My House” by David Byrne

On the surface, i.e. as far as the first verse is concerned, “Everybody’s Coming to My House” revolves around the vocalist ruminating on the prospect of welcoming a visitor(s), the addressee, into his home.

The titular expression is found in the chorus. Here, David initially relays that “now [that] everybody’s coming to house”, then he’s “never going to be alone”, which sounds like a good thing. But afterwards, he also puts forth that “they’re never gonna go back home”, i.e. return to their own domiciles.

And whether or not having a group of friends permanently lodged in your crib is positive or not is a matter of perspective.

So in actuality, what has been theorized is that with that latter expression especially, Byrne is actually speaking to a concept like social anxiety. So based on that understanding, the presumption would be that he’s one of those kinds of people who is keen on the idea of entertaining friends. However, at the same time he doesn’t want them sticking around for too long for whatever reason(s).

But from the second verse going, the song steers us in a different direction. Here it is suggested that maybe David isn’t actually singing about his literal house. Or in any event, that definitely isn’t the case after the initial verse and chorus.

Rather the second verse and bridge give the impression, most simply put, that the vocalist is espousing a practice like getting up and going out to see the world.

The House

With that understanding in mind, then the challenge becomes trying to connect that ideology with the wording of the chorus.

Going out on a limb, perhaps we can say that Byrne’s “house” is symbolic of making such a move, i.e. a more conscientious effort to enjoy life in its fullness. So then ‘everybody ‘coming to his house’ would be symbolic of a congregation of likeminded people. Furthermore, the fact that they aren’t leaving would be indicative of their commitment to that cause, or something like that.

David Byrne

David Byrne is a musician who made a name for himself as part of Talking Heads. Talking Heads is, a late 20th century new wave crew from NYC who, somewhat after the fact, proved to be one of the most-celebrated acts of their era.

While still running with the band, Byrne initiated a solo career which, up until this point, has seen him personally drop 10 studio albums (a few of them being collaborative efforts) between 1981 and 2018. The most recent of those projects is titled “American Utopia”, and it was made public by WMG subsidiary Nonesuch Records on 8 January 2018.

It is from that LP that we get “Everybody’s Coming to My House”. The song went on to serve as the album’s lead and only single (thus also making it the last single David has put out as of this writing).
