“Higher and Higher” by The Moody Blues
Written after the first lunar landing by man in the Sea of tranquility, this track basically talks about a trip to space. The writer employs several imagery to describe the elements of space as well as man’s ability to transcend their usual realm.
Metaphors such as man’s ‘flaming pyre’ directly references rockets. The central message of this song highlights how man is now able to tread above the skies thus conquering the long-held idea that they only belong to the earth. As the title implies, man keeps advancing in their exploration of the world and has learned to venture into the unknown above all other creatures.
The Moody Blues wrote this song and released it in 1969.
The Apollo 11 Landing on the Moon
On the 20th day of July 1969, Apollo 11 became the first spaceflight to land humans on the surface of the moon. It had the following three crew members:
- Neil Armstrong
- Buzz Aldrin
- Michael Collins
The spaceflight was launched on July 16 by a heavy-lift takeoff vehicle known as Saturn V which was stationed at the Kennedy Space Center. The aircraft was the 5th crewed mission of the Apollo program which was organized by NASA. The crew, led by Armstrong, left behind a flag of the United States and a patch to honor the fallen members of Apollo 1. On July 24, the spaceflight together with its crew landed safely on Earth.
