“I Got a Girl” by Tripping Daisy
There are two primary sentiments being expressed in “I Got a Girl”. The verses are dedicated to delineating the different characteristics that the addressee’s girlfriend possesses which causes him to adore her so much. So with that in mind, as well as taking into consideration the nature of the chorus, we can safely say that the thesis sentiment revolves around his love for her.
But as for the bridge, the vocalist reveals that everything isn’t all peachy-keen in this romance. To the contrary, now homegirl is depicted as a nag and also someone who may be dealing with her own disturbing case of depression. And regardless of how much the singer may dig her, he has now reached a point where she’s driving him bonkers, i.e. him questioning how much longer he can tolerate this relationship.
Also, the very last line of the song features the vocalist enlightening us to the fact his sweetheart “got a man”. Conventionally interpreted, that would mean she has another boyfriend besides himself. But it has also been put forth that maybe the singer is referring to himself, like in the third person or what have you.
But that noted, it wouldn’t be out of the way to postulate that part of the reason he’s fed up with this lady, besides her having the tendency to harass him at the wrong times, would be because he’s possibly sharing her with another guy.

Tripping Daisy and “I Got a Girl”
Tripping Daisy is a band from Dallas that released a few albums during the 1990s (i.e. from 1992 to 2000). The most successful of the four they put out was 1995’s “I Am an Elastic Firecracker”, a project backed by Island Records. It is from that LP that “I Got a Girl”, which was released on 20 June 1995, is derived.
This track also stands as the most notable single Tripping has ever put out, as it charted in a number of countries and broke the top 10 of Billboard US Modern Tracks and the Canadian Alternative 30.
This song was written by the four individuals who were holding down the Tripping Daisy brand at the time. These individuals are:
- vocalist Tim DeLaughter
- bassist Mark Pirro
- guitarist Wes Berggren
- drummer Bryan Wakeland
Berggren passed away in 1999, but DeLaughter, Pirro and Wakeland are still part of the band as of the writing of this post. And Daisy, collectively, are also acknowledged as the track’s producer, alongside Ted Niceley.

Let’s all galvanize around the Tripping Daisy manager, Chris Penn, as he is in a Dallas-area hospital after falling off a ladder. He is currently paralyzed. There is a GoFundMe currently set up in is honor. Please remember that all Daisy performers are here in Dallas and are relevant!
