“I Hope” by Gabby Barrett

In “I Hope”, Gabby Barrett is singing from the perspective of a lady in a failed romance. With the relationship now being dead, she is addressing her former boyfriend from that union. And the implication would be that the reason it came to an end is due to his infidelity. We can make this assumption because the primary sentiment the singer is expressing throughout is her “hope” that his current girlfriend cheats on him along the lines of the same way he cheated on Gabby. Indeed she takes things further by basically wishing that she breaks his heart in the worst ways imaginable.

Autobiographical Lyrics

The lyrics of this song are based largely on a relationship Gabby was actually in during her high school years. Moreover they are influenced by what she saw other ladies, such as her own family members, go through in their romances. And as originally conceptualized, it was supposed to be like the singer wishing her ex the best in light of their relationship dissolving, even if it was his fault. But based on the aforementioned experiences, Gabby knew that realistically that is not how women think when they may be cheated, dumped or similarly wronged by their partners. Rather, as illustrated by this tune, they would rather “hope” that their lovers receive the same type of treatment they gave out – and then some.

So conclusively, “I Hope” turned out being more of a vengeance tune, if you will, than a breakup song as first imagined. That is not to say that the singer herself intends on doing her ex any type of emotional harm.  But she is hoping that karma will totally break his heart.

Gabby Barrett’s “I Hope”song is an exercise in sarcasm. First off, Barrett is addressing her ex-boyfriend who is now moving with a different lady. And she dedicates the bulk of the lyrics to ‘hoping’ that he is indeed edified by his new girlfriend, in ways he can’t even imagine. But her concluding sentiment is that ‘she hopes’ that this lady, after he is completely smitten by her, turns around and cheats on him. And the reason she is saying so is because that is exactly what he did to her. So the implication is that when he did decide to cheat on Gabby, at the time she was very much in love with him.

Yes. The singer is hoping karma exacts justice on her ex-boyfriend via him being cheated on by the woman he loves.

yes she is very sentimentals towards him and she writes the song as a way of saying she hopes he has the same feelings that she did when he cheated on her she is just saying that she hopes he understands once it happens to him.

Had the same thing happen to me! But, my ex cheated with her with me. And I told her “Ironic how karma works!” Because that’s all i wanted was revenge, not him back.

wish this song had been written in 1985 because I would have played it day & nite for my late husband. 2 weeks after our 25th anniversary he told me about all the women he had been with so he said he wanted a divorce and that he loved me but he wasn’t in love with me. I had no idea what that meant. I refused to give him divorce as my revenge but I was emotionally stupid…my true reason was 3 kids last one just 3 yo; no job {no money}; no place to live. I felt numb for the next 30 yrs until he died. at that point I realized how stupid I was!

What is the main point of this song?

This song is a curse. Gabby would have been tried as a witch for these lyrics centuries ago. It’s unbelievable how wicked these hopes are and that one human could possibly WISH for some kind of revenge to exact such enormous suffering on another. These are the kind of thoughts that are supposed to remain private, not glorified. Imagine a world of people that all thought like this when they were wronged. I fully understand the want for vengeance, karma, etc. The point is overcoming that desire for another’s suffering, even if it may actually sound “justified” at the time. This is a literal wish that the offending ex-boyfriend experience a complete and total emotional collapse, likely to the point of insanity or suicide. It’s disturbing and anyone who is coincidentally inflicts this curse should be ashamed of being delighted by the effect.

To wish harm like she does on said ex is a combination of childish and more importantly unhealthy. Following a vengeful attitude like that will hurt her more than said guy every time. Doesn’t mean what the guy did was great, but neither does it mean he was necessarily a Don Juan.
