Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version) [From The Vault] by Taylor Swift

Is It Over Now? was written and produced by Taylor Swift and one of her most-regular behind-the-scenes’ collaborators, Jack Antonoff. Taylor has been rolling hard with Jack since 2013, and the original recording of this track dates to when Swift and co. were assembling her 2014 album, 1989. However, it did not make the playlist. But when Tay Tay decided to re-record and re-released the project through Republic Records, as 1989 (Taylor’s Version) on 27 October 2023, she likewise re-recorded Is It Over Now?, this time to be included. And since this is a song that was never released before, it also holds the distinction of being “From the Vault”.

Other Trivia/Facts

This is the closing track on the playlist of 1989 (Taylor’s Version), which is a decision that Taylor Swift herself sanctioned.

Is It Over Now? proved to be a major hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart (debuting as such on both lists), in addition to reaching number one in a handful of other national charts and including on the Billboard Global 200.

As far as the Hot 100 goes, with this track reaching the summit of that list Taylor made history, making her the first soloist as well as the first female musician to achieve three Hot 100 chart toppers in a single year. In January, her song Anti-Hero topped the list.  Then, just prior to Is It Over Now, Swift’s track Cruel Summer dominated the Hot 100. And interesting to note is that directly after Is It Over Now? and as of this writing, Cruel Summer has once again gone to number one. As such, Tay Tay also made history in that regard, becoming the first female musician to have successive number ones on the Hot 100 twice, as she achieved the same feat in 2014 via Shake It Off followed by Blank Space from the original 1989.

To note, Is It Over Now? marks the 11th time overall that Taylor Swift has dropped a Billboard Hot 100 chart topper.

Speaking of the original 1989, Swift has stated that this song is sentimentally related to a couple of others, I Wish You Would and Out of the Woods, which did make the original cut of the album. Swifties, being the dedicated sleuths that they are, have concluded that those two tracks are based on Taylor’s short-lived romance with A-list British musician Harry Styles, which was ongoing circa early 2013. Therefore the general consensus, as far as ‘conspiracy theories’ go, is that the lyrics of Is It Over Now? were likewise inspired by that romance. And of course, there are a number of lyrical clues within the song which people intimately familiar with Swift and Styles’ relationship have deemed may theoretically point to such.

This track served as the second single from 1989 (Taylor’s Version), being preceded in that regard by Sl*t!.

The Lyrics

Although Taylor Swift is one of our favorite artists to cover here at Song Meanings and Facts, we don’t necessarily count ourselves as Swifties, i.e. fans who are deeply familiar with every aspect of her life. So we can’t definitively say that the addressee of this song is Harry Styles, though there are lyrics, especially those found in the second verse, which strongly suggest that such is the case.

As implied in the pre-chorus, the addressee would be one of Taylor’s famous exes and furthermore, of course, one that she dated prior to writing this song. But this isn’t really about celebrity or anything like that but rather, most simply interpreted, Swift having dealt with a painful breakup. And the reason why the title is presented as a question is because it isn’t as if she and the addressee ever officially broke up. Instead, it reads more as if the latter is akin to a playa and beyond that one of those types who doesn’t really give AF about keeping his extracurricular activities discrete. So it’s as if Taylor felt played. But she did apparently find some vindication by sleeping with another man herself. Also, despite his womanizing ways, she’s convinced that the addressee is still in love with her, as the woman he went on to subsequently date was a “clone” of Swift.

And indeed, when you look at their dating history, it reveals that Taylor and Harry’s romance just sort of dissolved, with their never being any type of direct statement of the pair disassociating. So with all of that in mind, what we can gather from this song is that when it was written, their romance still wasn’t officially over, in a manner of speaking. Rather, it degenerated into one of those types of situations where the guy is dating other people, and the girl is likewise seeing at least one other guy, but the feelings between them are still fresh. And conclusively, it’s as if at the time, Swift was looking for some type of closure. She wanted to know for final and for good if the romance was dead, even though in her heart she obviously knew that it was.
