Lackin’ by Denise Julia
Denise Julia is a singer from the Philippines whose prominence has been gradually increasing in recent times. For instance, even though her Genius discography dates back to mid-2020, Lackin’, which came out on 17 November 2023, has quickly established itself as her most-popular songs (based on Genius pageviews as of this writing).
That said, it is only now, on the aforementioned date, that Denise released her first album, an EP titled Sweet Nothings, which features Lackin’ as well as six other tracks. And besides her singing talent, Julia is also being celebrated as the result of her physical attractiveness. So as it currently stands, she is a trending name in the P-pop scene and has been since at least 2022. But it remains to be seen how far her music career will actually go.
Writer & Production
Denise Julia wrote Lackin’ on her own and also produced the track, in that latter regard working alongside J. Greg and Duaneinsane.
Other Facts
The songstress has described Lackin’ as being “the title track” of Sweet Nothings, which we will rather take to mean its lead single. She also admitted that this is the last song she completed for the album and that it ‘came to her in a dream’.
The Lyrics to Lackin’
Putting forth that someone is “lacking” is a colloquialism pointing to the belief that said individual falls short in some type of notable regard(s). In the case of this song, that individual would be the addressee, who is Denise’s ex.
The singer does not directly specify why she feels this way towards her former sweetheart. But as implied, it would be because he did not rightfully value her. Indeed, the beginning of the first verse suggests that he unceremoniously dumped Julia. But now he’s the one texting late at night, trying to get her back.
By contrast, it reads as in in the aftermath of breaking up, the vocalist has concluded that she’s perhaps better off without her ex, as again, he was “lacking” when they were together. But it isn’t such that she’s completely shunning the idea of taking him back. Instead, as revealed in the second verse, Denise wants to make sure that he’s truly sorry beforehand. And furthermore, she needs to be convinced this time around, he will appreciate her. As suggested, that would include dude no longer “doing sneaky sh*t”, a statement which presumably alludes to Julia’s ex having proven himself unfaithful in the past.
