Lil Boo Thang by Paul Russell

Paul Russell is a hip-hop artist from L.A. whose discography dates back to 2019, but he never scored a hit until the release of Lil Boo Thang on 18 August 2023. This song made it onto a plethora of US Billboard charts, peaking at number 23 on the Hot 100, in addition to appearing on the UK Singles Chart and music rankings in a number of other countries.

Its success was fueled by a snippet of the tune which Russell created and uploaded onto TikTok beforehand, initially doing so just for “fun”, as he had become discouraged by lack of musical success on the social media front. But said snippet achieved heavy virality, not only on TikTok but also Instagram, thus prompting Paul to flesh it out into a full-fledged track and leading to him signing with a major label, Arista Records. And as implied by the singer, him taking a “fun” and “happy” approach to composing this song contributed to its overall appeal.

It has also been pointed out that a strong factor in the likability of Lil Boo Thang is due to it sampling a certified R&B classic, 1977’s Best of my Love by The Emotions, which took home both a Grammy and an American Music Award, besides other accomplishments.

Writing & Production Credits

Al McKay and Maurice White (1941-2016), as also credited, alongside Paul Russell, are the authors of Lil Boo Thang. And the producer of the track is Sean Cook.

The Lyrics

Anyone conversant in African-American slang would know from the jump that the phrase “lil’ boo thang” would be a reference to a romantic interest of the singer. And as presented, said individual, who is the addressee, already has a man, but Paul is smitten by her nonetheless.

The lyrics aren’t really that detailed, as the song for instance only has one standard verse (i.e. outside of the choruses, bridge and intro). But what it reads like is the singer not being deterred by “lil’ boo thang” currently being with someone else. Instead, it’s more as if Russell is biding his time or, as seemingly put forth in the verse, waiting for her man to travel so that he can make his move. And the singer’s confidence is apparently based on his own wealth, such as having gold teeth and a Jeep and relatedly his ability to show the addressee a good time, once he finally gets the opportunity to do so.
