“Love You Like I Used To” by Russell Dickerson
Based on the title of this song one would logically deduce that it is based on a romantic relationship Russell Dickerson is in, which is correct. They would also likely assume that said romance has its fair share of issues. And Russell actually plays along with the latter assumption in the first verse. For instance, he states that he has “always loved” the addressee, but now “something has changed”. However, in what can be deemed as a surprise twist, we come to discover that the idea he is actually alluding to is his love for her getting stronger over time.
Indeed the person he had in mind when he wrote this song is his wife Kailey, whom he’s been married to since 2013 and has been dating significantly longer than that. And basically what he is saying is that their love continues to get better as time progresses. So without a doubt “Love You Like I Used To”, despite the initial impression the title and first verse may give, is very much a love song. And more specifically it speaks to a romantic relationship which is increasingly-edifying to the singer.
