Teya Dora is a singer from Serbia whose biggest claim to fame, as of this writing, is the dropping of “Džanum” on 22 March 2023. That is to say that this track, which was put out through a label called Režim & Južni Vetar, blew up on TikTok, Spotify, etc. and also broke the top 10 of Billboard’s Croatia Songs ranking.
And besides serving as its vocalist, Dora also co-wrote and co-produced this song with Luxonee, and its other writer is another musician from their part of the world who goes by the name of Coby.
The Lyrics of “Džanum”
According to one explanation that’s made its way online, this song was inspired by the fact that the aforementioned Serbia, i.e. Teya’s homeland, has dealt with a considerable amount of warfare in recent years. But if such is the case, the songstress doesn’t speak directly to that reality. Instead, the simplest way of describing the character she portrays is as one who is woefully fatalistic.
For instance, the song’s only true verse reads as if the vocalist is haunted by bad dreams. Dora has also concluded that she has “no luck” and “no salvation”, being “cursed”, as she puts it in the chorus.
Furthermore the singer comes off, as these lyrics are translated into English, as if she is looking forward to death and even the end of the world. And it may be that all of these emotions and outlooks, as alluded to throughout, are what she’s experiencing during her “nightmares”.
With that in mind, it has also been put forth that “Džanum” is based on Serbian fairytales. As explained, these legends revolve around stories whereas for one reason or another the featured couple, being truly in love, are unable to be with each other.

As further explained, that may sometimes be due to the interference of evil forces. The title, based on context, can also be interpreted romantically, as “dear” or “sweetheart”, though it may also more generally point to “my soul”.
And in the lyrics, we are met with the mention of the vocalist’s “darling”, though it isn’t abundantly clear if Dora means so in a romantic context. Or put otherwise, this song does not have any type of discernible romantic undertone as far as we can tell, and usage of the term “darling”, in context, may be Teya’s way of identifying with or relating to the addressee/listener in general.
So all lyrics considered and most simply put, it reads as if the vocalist is suffering from the type of nightmares that she feels no one in their right mind would want to experience. Indeed, it may be such that they are even affecting while she is awake, i.e. making Teya’s outlook on the world and herself especially bleak.
