Meaning of “Here Comes the Hotstepper” by Ini Kamoze

“Here Comes the Hotstepper” is a classic dancehall song from the early 1990s which reads like the type of gangsta rap/reggae tracks that were poppin’ during that era. For example, besides implying that he is a real-life criminal, Ini also touts himself as a “lyrical gangster”, i.e. an exceptional vocalist/lyricist. Or relayed from a different perspective, he’s not somebody you would want to f*-k with on or off the mic.

But that said, this song did top the Billboard Hot 100 as well as a number of music charts in Europe. So chances are that most people who enjoyed it couldn’t make out all that Kamoze is saying anyway, because despite offering a smooth delivery, he also has a heavy West Indian accent. So this track became famous more for its groove than its message.

And with that in mind, perhaps we can conclude by agreeing Ini was, during his brief heyday, a “lyrical gangster”, as out of nowhere this Jamaican artist was able to jack the mainstream music scene for a couple of weeks.

“Here comes the hotstepper (murderer)
I’m the lyrical gangster (murderer)
Dial emergency number (murderer)
Still love you like that (murderer)”
