Nightwish’s “Noise” Lyrics Meaning

The “noise” which Nightwish talks about in this song is a metaphor for constantly being plugged into the “matrix”. Or a simpler way of putting it is that this song is based on the concept of the modern human dependency on electronic media being a bad thing. And there is a special emphasis on social media, as the band portrays vesting in online personas as being a vain pursuit.

So basically what we have here is a song in which the listener is under a constant flux of symbolisms pointing to the aforementioned ideas. And what is all boils down to is the notion that our reliance on computers, televisions and handheld devices has made us lose touch with mother nature. Indeed if we were to turn these appliances off for a decent amount of time we would come to realize “the Earth has a real voice”, as in it creates its own background noise which can get us through the day.
