“Read Between the Lines” by Aaliyah
On “Read Between the Lines”, Aaliyah plays the role of a lady who is strongly under the impression that her romantic partner is cheating. Furthermore, she has ample evidence, primarily the strange way he’s been behaving, to support this theory.
So by the conclusion of the story, it is implied that their relationship has in fact fallen in part as a result. And in the aftermath he is still interested in her, though the feeling is not mutual.
“Read Between the Lines” was produced by Bud’da, who also co-wrote the song in conjunction with Static Major.
This track came out on 7 July 2001, via Virgin America and Blackground Records, as part of Aaliyah’s album which is also entitled “Aaliyah”.
The tune features live horns played by Ron Blake.
“Aaliyah”(“The Red Album”)
This album is Aaliyah’s 3rd and final studio album. The young singer unfortunately lost her life in a plane crash on her way back to the US from the Bahamas. She traveled to the Bahamas to shoot a music video for the song, “Rock the Boat”.
The singer’s sudden death triggered an increase in album sales worldwide with figures going as high as over 13 million copies.
The album was released through two music labels, namely Blackground Records and Virgin Records. Blackground Records is an American record label owned by Jomo and Aaliyah’s uncle, Barry Hankerson.
Nicknamed “The Red Album” due to the color of the album’s packaging, “Aaliyah” has been described by critics as one of the best R&B albums of its time.
The album was not available on streaming platforms until 2021 due to prolonged legal battles between the album creators, Aaliyah’s estates and Blackground Records.
For promotional purposes, three songs were put out before the official release of the album. “We Need a Resolution” came out on the 13th of April 2001 as the first single. “More Than a Woman” was dropped on October 29 of 2001 as single #2. The final single, “Rock the Boat” was released in November of the same year.
All three singles were successful, with two of them, “More Than a Woman” and “Rock the Boat” getting nominations at the 2003 Grammys.
