“Seize the Power” by Yonaka

The way Theresa Jarvis has described the backdrop behind “Seize the Power” is by harping back to when we’re first born. When people initially come into the world, i.e. small babies, they have a sense of carefreeness and confidence that will likely never be reclaimed later. That is the gist of what the vocalist is promoting, i.e. a don’t-give-AF, all-out attitude when it comes to doing one’s thing.

But since Theresa and the gang are in fact adults, what’s being put forth isn’t just that simple. For instance, unlike babies, who are only semi-cognizant of the world, later in life we must more consciously deal with the likes of haters and people whose association negatively affects our self-esteem. Such individuals are acknowledged in the first verse, in the sense that Theresa has now decided to shun them.

But also, the vocalist is imparting what she refers to as “a new religion” onto listeners. This is the kind of religion in which you ‘feel like a boss’ and “do what you want”. Or explained otherwise, she is espousing adopting a level of confidence so high that nothing intimidates you. And it is such a lifestyle that she equates with “independence” and “living… in the present” which, as implied, is the ideal modus operandi.

Seize that Power!

So conclusively, this song is like a hotchpotch of different religious, social and psychological ideas. And as for the title/chorus, it centers on the notion of the ability to achieve the above since it resides within us all. However, one has to “seize the power” in order to experience it.

Meanwhile, “Seize the Power” is the title track to a mixtape the band put out in 2021. The song itself was released as a single on 27 January of that year. Said effort was backed by a label Creature Records. Considering that Yonaka have both a single and EP titled “Creature” (2018), Creature Records may be a company they founded themselves.

The members of Yonaka are:

  • Theresa Jarvis (vocalist)
  • George Werbrouck-Edwards (guitarist)
  • Alex Crosby (bassist)
  • Rob Mason (drummer)

The entire band is credited as a unit with producing this track and individually in terms of writing it.
