“Space (I Believe In)” by Pixies
Most simply explained, “Space (I Believe In)” serves as a shoutout to a musician by the name of Jef Feldman. Feldman is not a member of Pixies. But on this particular song and another to be found on “Trompe le Monde”, he plays a type of drum known as the tabla, which according to Black Francis Jef is a master at. And concerning the title, apparently what the vocalist is saying is something like the band enlisted Feldman to participate on this track in the name of “fill(ing) up the space” that was available therein. Outside of that this tune seems to be sort of a freestyle, one in which the lyrics are repetitive and, for lack of a better word, comical.

Pixies
Pixies is a rock band that has been around since the mid-1980s. It was also around that time, i.e. the late 1980s to early 1990s, that they experienced their most notable success. And “Space (I Believe In)” is a non-single track from their third album, “Trompe le Monde”, which came out on 23 September 1991 via British label 4AD. In fact despite being from Boston, Pixies have, unlike in their homeland, proven enduringly-popular in the UK (at least as far as their studio albums go).
Two members of Pixies from the “Trompe le Monde” days, vocalist Black Francis and guitarist Joey Santiago, are still members of the group now, in 2022. Back then they were joined by bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering.
Frank Black (aka Black Francis) also uses the opportunity of this song to big up Perry Mason, a popular TV show from the 1950s-60s starring Raymond Burr (1917-1993).
