“The Code” by Jon Connor

The title of this song refers to “the code” of the streets, as outlined by Jon Connor.  Or stated otherwise, he goes about delineating what characterizes an individual as a “real n***a”. And in that regard yes, a real n***a in his eyes is indeed thoro. In fact such a person is able to utilize the hard-fought lessons of the ‘hood and flip them into money-making ventures.

But at the same time, this isn’t one of those kinds of tracks that glorifies violence and wealth and goes about depicting the successful ‘hood male as someone who has mad dough and is always ready to shoot. Rather Jon depicts “real n***as” as not only being sympathetic but also wise enough to control their emotions. Indeed he goes about listing a whole bunch of characteristics which exemplify a such an individual – enough even to write a small book so to speak. But at the end of the day what it can all be boiled down to is the idea that the rapper does not necessarily approve of how certain individuals are conducting themselves. And this includes not only certain dudes in the ‘hood but also likewise celebrities, like himself, that have a following in the public eye.
