The Mountain Goats’ “No Children” Lyrics Meaning
The vocalist of “No Children”, as explained by the artist who conceptualized/sings it, would be someone who is currently going through a divorce, for lack of a better term.
And theoretically, the sentiments expressed would be indicative of what some people actually feel in such situations. That is to say that they center on the singer having a complete feeling of ill will towards his soon-to-be ex. Not only that, but he also feels equally as sorry for himself. And it is safe to put forth, based on the tone of the lyrics, that this romance has reached the point of irreconciliation.
So basically, the poetic lyrics that make up “No Children” serve multiple purposes. One is to show that the vocalist has lost all interest in perpetuating his relationship with the addressee.
Secondly, he is deeply immersed in emotional pain – so much so that he wishes for his own expeditious demise. And likewise, it ain’t like he’s hoping the addressee lives happily-ever-after either.
Song’s Title (“No Children”)
Meanwhile, the term “no children” is not found in the lyrics. But taking the featured narrative as well as the aforenoted explanation by John Darnielle into consideration, it can reasonably be put forth that what it speaks to is the fact that this relationship didn’t last long enough for the couple involved to produce any children, i.e. actually establish an enduring familial unit between themselves.
And before closing, let it also be known that this track does not utilize any gender pronouns. So John is likely singing from the perspective of both the male and female involved.

The Mountain Goats
The Mountain Goats is one of those musical acts that sounds like an entire group. But for the most part the moniker is held down by a single musician, that being John Darnielle. John was raised in California and throughout the years has teamed up with a number of other artists to promote this brand.
And he has been quite prolific in that endeavor. The Mountain Goats has actually released 20 studio albums between 1994 and 2021.
No Children
This track is from the seventh of those efforts, “Tallahassee”. “Tallahassee” is an album that a British label called 4AD put out on 5 November 2002. Other musicians who participated on this track besides Darnielle are Peter Hughes and guitarist Franklin Bruno. The former is still down with The Mountain Goats as of the writing of this post.
It would seem that only one single, “See America Right”, was released from “Tallahassee”. Therefore “No Children” really doesn’t have a chart history to speak of – or at least not as of yet. That is to say that the reason we’re about it today is because, as fate would have it, the song is currently trending on TikTok, nearly two decades after its initial release.
Indeed, there is even a specific dance routine to go along with this trend.
A live rendition of this song can also be found on The Mountain Goats’ 2020 album “The Jordan Lake Sessions: Volumes 1 and 2”. And “No Children” is also noted as being a regular part of the band’s setlists, i.e. a fan favorite.
