“Thunder” by Mayday Parade
“Thunder” is highly metaphorical in sticking to its weather-related motif. And honestly, whereas there are glimpses of clarity here and there, that the narrative is speaking to some type of troubled relationship, the intended message may fly over some listeners’ heads.
And the most likely cause for misunderstanding is that the vocalist never really establishes his role in the scheme of things, as in if he is speaking from the perspective of the female character introduced in the first verse and referred to throughout or if he rather is the person in this tumultuous, seemingly-romantic relationship with her.
Luckily, Brook Betts has clarified that what “Thunder” is designed to speak to is the notion of relationships gradually having their tough spots alright. But the “ones” that are actually “good”, as he put it, are “worth holding onto”. Or put more simply, people shouldn’t quit on truly-edifying associations when the going gets tough. And the way he has described this thesis sentiment also would imply that he is speaking to romantic relationships specifically.
So conclusively, we may not know exactly what the vocalist means when he puts forth that the female subject “waits for thunder”. But we do know, based on the chorus and above explanation, that in the main chorus he would be speaking on behalf of her partner and arguing that, even though she may want to “run away”, they should rather cherish what they have and endeavor to ‘turn things around’.
